Projects drive the development of the geopark

One of the most important functions of the secretariat is to support project development. However, the activities within the geopark are driven by a large network of partners comprising businesses, associations, and educational and cultural institutions. The geopark consists of the sum of all the excellent initiatives and projects carried out across the entire area.

Six priority areas

At the secretariat, we work across six priority areas, which overlap to some extent. What they all have in common is that they contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and UNESCO’s priority areas for geoparks. Across these areas, we place emphasis on local cooperation and participation, outreach and communication, ongoing evaluation, and national and international cooperation.

1. Geology and nature

We work to ensure that the area’s geological assets and sites are protected, whilst strengthening local knowledge of and pride in the landscape and nature.

2. Education

Together with school authorities, we develop a wide range of educational activities to increase knowledge, curiosity and a sense of responsibility for our landscape, nature and culture.

3. Active outdoor life

We support projects which, with a balance between use and protection, expand opportunities for outdoor activities and make nature accessible to both residents and visitors.

4. Geotourism

The tourism we attract must help to maintain and enhance our unique geographical character, environment, heritage, aesthetics and culture, whilst benefiting and engaging the local community.

5. Art and Cultural History

We create activities, collaborations and outreach initiatives that support the vibrant cultural scene in order to nurture, challenge and renew the area’s unique traditions and cultural heritage.

6. Research

Research is absolutely crucial to the geopark, as it helps us understand our world better and how we can develop and organise ourselves in the most appropriate and sustainable way.
